KUALA LUMPUR: IN every natural disaster, there will be a committed few who carry on with their duties without fuss.
Deputy director-general of Health Datuk Dr Lokman Hakim found that out when assessing flood relief efforts in Kemaman, Terengganu, recently. There, he came to know of the sacrifices Health Ministry staff had been making to help flood victims, and to ensure hospitals and their equipment were well protected. Dr Lokman said he was moved to tears by the sacrifices Kemaman Hospital staff were making. The hospital, he said, had been turned into a flood relief centre because staff members were also among the victims.
Their priority, said Dr Lokman, was the patients, the victims and the hospital itself — never themselves.
“I was told that hospital staff were busy relocating medical equipment, despite knowing their homes were inundated.”
He was around when three hospital staff returned from a perilous trip to flood-affected areas.
